How to play Licence to Win

Setup

Start by shuffling all the cards so they are in a random order. Then place the first landmark, Cape Reinga Lighthouse, where you want all the roads to start. You will also need to decide on the spacing of your landmarks, this will determine how long the game plays on for. If your unsure what to start with, we recommend a spacing of three.

The youngest person will start first.

Gameplay

This game is played in turns. Each turn will start with the current player picking up a card from the deck. After their turn is complete, they person next to them (who answered the question) will become the new current player.

Question Card

If the card they pick up is a question card, they ask the question with all the multiple choice questions, to the person next to them. If this person gets the answer correct, they get the card and extend their road with it, otherwise the card is returned to the deck. If this is their first correct question, they place their card road side up just after the Cape Reinga Lighthouse.

Action Card

If instead a action card is picked up, the player completes the task themselves. Here are the included action cards and what must be done:

  • Road Block: The player who picked up the card may block the road of any other player they chose.
  • Flat Tyre: The player who picked up the card must block their own road.
  • Switching Lanes: The player who picked up the card may swap roads with any other player they chose. This must be used even if the current player is leading.
  • Pulled Over: The player who picked up the card must return all cards making up their road from the last landmark they hit to the  bottom of the deck. They have be sent back the their last landmark.

Once the action card has been completed, the player must pick up again.

Roads

When building your road you will pass through landmarks, included are:

  • Cape Reigna Lighthouse
  • Auckland Sky Tower
  • Wellington Behive
  • Invercargill Water Tower

If you extend your road and are the first person to reach a landmark, you may place the landmark on your recently added card.

Road Blocks

Having your road blocked by a Road Block or Flat Type action card means you will miss a turn. If your road is blocked and you answer a question correctly, rather than extending your road, you instead get to remove the road block. After being removed you don't get to extend your road until your next turn.

Winning

The first person to reach the Invercargill Water Tower is the winner. At this point you may choose to end the game there, or continue on to find the runner up winners.
